A HOST of young golfers, some as young as five, took part in a junior golf academy at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club.

All ages and abilities attended the academy where they were shown all aspects of the sport, from long game to pitching, chipping and putting.

The juniors were encouraged to take part in all aspects of the day with the opportunity to win prizes increasing their enthusiasm.

Sam Pain and Amy Millward, who work at the club and led the event, said the day proves there is plenty of potential out there, even among five and six year-olds.

Meanwhile, some of the club’s older members took advantage of the recent mild weather by entering the men’s Texas AM event.

The team format sees the best two stableford scores per hole counting.

The ability of those taking part was impressive with six teams ending tied on 94 points.

A group consisting of Duncan Trow, David Annetts, Mike Wood and Nick Webb, however, posted a good score of 96 meaning they were ahead all day.

However, they were pipped at the post by a team made up of Gordon Moraity, Rich Smith, Guy Taylor and Bob Bennett, who ended the day with 97 points.

The latter was playing his last competition before moving to Florida for six months.

Captain Taylor said: “We knew the score to beat was going to be in the late nineties.

“We slipped away a little at the end with the daylight decreasing.

“It’s a relief to get the win by such a tight margin.

“A massive thanks to everyone playing for making it a great event.”

Elsewhere, Ludlow Golf Club held held Autumn Foursomes Cup.

Players braved very windy conditions throughout the day.

But it was Liz Weston and Chris Bradshaw who coped best with the weather, coming out on top with a score of 78 and 1/2.
