COLIN Woodfield believes his fighters can pack a real punch after opening Ludlow Amateur Boxing Club's new home.

Between 30 and 40 people had a look around the premises at Wheeler Road after it was officially opened.

The club's original building was demolished over safety concerns several years ago.

Volunteers assisted with the fitting of the building , which will also serve as a community building.

The new building project has been supported by Ludlow Town Council, South Shropshire Housing Association and Shropshire Council.

Vice-chairman Woodfield said he was pleased with the turn-out.

"We officially opened last Friday, then people were given the opportunity to look around on Saturday," said Woodfield.

"I always get interest interest in the club, almost on a daily basis from people wanting to join and my phone never stops ringing.

"It is quite a friendly, atmospheric club"

Woodfield's son, Chadd Woodfield, was on hand to demonstrate his skills, as was 10-year-old Max Weaver.

"Max is an up and coming boxer who should do well," said Woodfield.

"We have nine nine boxers with us this season and I have high hopes for it."

The club will be holding a fund-raiser at Ludlow Racecourse on October 10.

Between 11 and 14 matches will take place, with a meal preceding it at 7pm.

"We still have tables available and it should be a knock-out show," said Woodfield.

One boxer, Chris Preece, fought last Sunday in the West Midlands Senior Novice Championships in Donnington.

But Preece lost against Rugeley Police ABC's Steve Smith.

"The match saw Chris step up his game in entering the championships for the first time and boxing four two-minute rounds with no head guard," said Woodfield.

Meanwhile, Chadd Woodfield is due to compete in the national junior championships in November, while Ben Bywater will be in action at the youth championships.

Terry Dean Smith is set to star at the schoolboy championships.
