THERE were some fine displays as Ludlow Swimming Club competed in the second round of the Mercian Summer League at Solihull.

Ffion Gilbert, Jack Corston, Jordan Angel, Kieran Martin, Isla Meredith and Walter Meredith all shone.

Other excellent performances came from Oliver Morgan, Guy Woodhouse, Charlie Brown, Tilly Evans, Minnie-Mae George and Charlie Evans, who swam not only for their own age group but up into a higher age bracket.

Head coach Adam Fear said: “We were up against some big clubs, where they have a much larger selection of swimmers than we do, however, we put up a good fight."

“With coming from such a small area as Ludlow, in comparison to the other clubs from Lichfield, Coventry, Worcester and more, we did well to put out a team as good as we did.

“The team consisted of swimmers who were very familiar to the competition environment as well as some of our younger swimmers who had never been in that situation before and were competing for their first time. “

Due to illnesses and injuries some of the team couldn't make and the club thanks Heulwen Gilbert, Charlie Evans and Eve Carnell who competed at late notice.

Fear said: “This commitment is exactly what the club needs to help us move forward and is always notice. Those swimmers showing their loyalty and commitment to the club will be rewarded by being selected to represent Ludlow more and more times as we continue to compete in various Swimming Leagues.”

Looking forward to the next round, the cliub have some work to do on a few things ahead of the final round at The Snowdome in Tamworth on July 12.

Meanwhile, Ludlow Swimming Club held their first ever Aquathon on Sunday 8th June in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust which raised £230.

The winners were presented with certificates and a small prize sponsored by the swimming club.

One of the parents rose to the occasion and baked cakes for everyone.

Club spokesman Steve Martin said ““The event was a great success and the British weather was kind.

“The atmosphere was fantastic, everyone got involved with parents, family and friends assisting with timekeeping and marshalling. Around the running course, everyone was cheered and encouraged.”

He added: “For some of the children this was their first ever competition and they enjoyed combining swimming and running. We hope this will encourage them to participate in more events in the future.”
