NEW captain Will Gough has royal ambitions for his tenure at Tenbury Rugby Club.

The 22-year-old is a former pupil at the prestigious Gordonstoun school in Elgin, where Prince Charles was educated.

Gough, who works on his family’s farm at Rochford, believes Tenbury will have a good mixture of youth and experience in Midlands Four West (North) next season.

“I am looking forward to the new season and we have some young lads who are going from strength to strength,” he said.

“We have got some young players so it is probably a transitional period for the club and we lost some momentum at the beginning of the season.

“We picked it up towards the end of the season and we have got some good egos and some good players and I am sure we can build a team around it.”

Gough, whose brother Ed Gough plays in the second team at Luctonians, said his ambition had been to skipper Tenbury’s first team.

“Ever since I have been able to play senior rugby at 17 years old, I have been involved in Tenbury Rugby Club.

“My dad, Roger Gough, played for Tenbury in the mid 1970s.

“I have always been keen to do something with the first team.”

“Since the first time I played for Tenbury, I always aspired to be first-team captain.”

Gough, who was also educated at Abberley pre-prep school, works full-time on his family’s mixed arable farm.

He will be backed up on the rugby front by new vice-captain Pete Stevens, who had skippered Tenbury for the previous two seasons.

“I knew that Pete Stevens was thinking about packing up as captain and I was approached by him and John Webb before the end of the season,” recalled Gough.

“I am not going to change the coaching set-up and I would like John Webb to be involved again.

“Pete has done a terrific job for the club and he’s brought in some fresh faces. It will be a challenge to build on that and the work that he’s done.”
