A SUPERB all-round display from Tom Gloster inspired Tenbury Cricket Club to their first Worcestershire County League triumph in two seasons.

Man-of-the-match Gloster cracked 80 and took four wickets in Tenbury’s 58-run victory at old rivals Alveley in Division Three.

Tenbury failed to win a league match last season as they struggled badly and finished bottom of Division Two.

Club stalwart Jonathan Pearson said it was fantastic for the players to enjoy the sweet taste of success and thinks it will give renewed confidence for Saturday’s home match against Netherton.

Pearson said: “We did not win a match last season – we reached a level which was a step too far for the club and we struggled and lost players.

“But it was a great feeling to win a match and we are third in the league. We celebrated in style with a few drinks at Alveley and then a few more in the refurbished bar facilities at Penlu.”

He added: “The league has decided that the first six matches of this season are played on a straight win or lose basis – and I think that certainly helped us because Alveley had to chase our total.

“After the first six matches, teams can play for winning or losing draws.”

Gloster, a former Stourport player, helped Tenbury to an imposing 285-8 on an excellent pitch at Alveley in last Saturday’s clash.

He arrived at the crease to strike 80 after Ed Corfield (85) and stand-in skipper Tom Pugh (45) had laid the foundations of Tenbury’s innings with an opening stand of 110.

Pearson said: “A few of us chipped in with runs but Gloster batted very well and we were delighted to post a competitive total after we struggled to do this last season.”

After the interval, Gloster claimed four wickets and was backed up by George Pearson (three wickets) and Tom Rawlings (two wickets) and the hosts were bowled out for 227.

Pearson said: “We have played Alveley quite a lot in recent seasons and they don’t seem to have an overseas player this summer –and that makes a huge difference.”

Pearson is not available for this weekend’s match but say Aaron Morris is likely to return to captain the team.

“We played Netherton last season and I don’t think we have anything to fear,” added Pearson.

Meanwhile, Tenbury are starting their outdoor training for junior players at Penlu on Friday, May 23 from 5.30pm. Pearson and Gloster will be providing the coaching.
