TENBURY Town have missed out on creating a dream final – but have now set their sights on clinching promotion to Herefordshire League Division One.

Darren Worthington’s Town were not able to set up a showdown against Tenbury United after suffering an agonising 4-3 defeat at Wellington Colts in the Jock Handley Cup semi-final.

Worthington admitted his players had been affected by the energy-sapping 2-1 midweek defeat against Orleton Colts in the HFA Junior Cup final.

“It was a very disappointing afternoon,” said Worthington.

“I think we are all very disappointed that we could not overcome Wellington Colts to set up a dream final against Tenbury United.

“We have never played Tenbury United and we know a big crowd would have turned up to watch an all-Tenbury final.”

Worthington must now raise his team’s spirits to finish the season with a flourish and focus on Saturday’s trip to promotion rivals Fownhope Reserves.

“Saturday’s game is a massive one for us but, sadly, we have a few players missing on a stag weekend in Hamburg,” said Worthington.

“We need to keep working hard and believe we can achieve back to back promotions,” said Worthington, who has agreed to carry on as manager next term.

Mark Boucker bagged a brace and Adam Everall also scored as Town lost their semi-final tie against Wellington Colts.

Worthington said: “We started off pretty well and we took the lead when Alex Lombardi crossed for Everall to score but the lads got tired and we trailed 2-1 at the interval.

“We were suffering from a few injuries, too, and that didn’t help our cause and we made the tie look close when we scored near the end.”

Worthington was pleased with the display from goalkeeper Steve Sumner.

“Steve got over his mistake in the cup final and gave another excellent performance.”
