THE surprise withdrawal of Shrewsbury United has dented fourth-placed Bishops Castle Town’s promotion chances.

United pulled out of the Mercian First Division, meaning Castle lose the six points they won against Shrewsbury earlier in the season.

Crucially it also wipes off 24 from Andy Green’s side’s goal difference tally, now at 27.

Castle, skippered by Mark Griffiths, now find themselves outside, looking in, eight points off top side Childs Ercall with four games to play.

Both their weekend fixtures were cancelled, with Wrockwardine Wood Juniors and then Oswestry Town, in the cup, both unable to field sides.

And while they claim points from the Juniors games, Green said it is a missed opportunity to close the gap in goal difference on the top-three; the hapless relegation candidates have a goal difference -72 after 23 games.

Next up is a visit to fellow basement club Shawbury United Reserves, but Green is already targeting a their “massive” final-day fixture against fifth-placed Rock Rovers.
