FORMER Worcester City goalkeeper Mark Wright will be making a surprise return to Tenbury United’s line up for their Jock Handley Cup semi-final showdown at Bromyard FC.

Regular stopper Jason Griffiths is not available for Saturday’s tie, and joint-manager Aaron Morris has signed up Wright, who appeared for United a few years ago.

However, Morris is facing a race against time after hurting his leg playing indoor cricket for Tenbury at Leominster on Sunday.

Morris said: “Mark Wright played a few games for us a few years ago and he’s a decent goalkeeper. He was with Worcester City when he was 18 or 19 years old.

“We know that Bromyard are a very good side and have a experienced player, Chris Jefferson, who leads the line. They will be a very decent outfit but if we can play as well as we can, there’s no reason why we can’t get a positive result.

Dale Withers struck against last weekend as United secured a 1-0 win in their top-of-the-table clash against Ledbury Town Reserves in Herefordshire League Division One

United are now 10 points clear at the top of the table and Morris thinks they need three more league wins to take the title.

Withers notched United’s goal after just 15 minutes, heading in George Pearson’s free kick and at the back-post.

Morris said: “It was pretty comfortable for a one-goal victory. Ledbury are a decent side and I thought we defended very well.”

Meanwhile, Tenbury Town booked a semi-final tie against Woofferton after a 1-0 success over higher-graded Ewyas Harold Reserves in the HFA Junior Cup.

Man-of-the-match Ashley Botwood scored the winner, a 35-yard thunderbolt after just 10 minutes. He also had a first-half penalty saved after Alex Bright had been fouled.

Alex Lombardi left the field after just four minutes, following a nasty-looking challenge.

Lombardi sprained an ankle in the incident and is likely to miss Town’s home match with Fownhope Reserves this Saturday in Herefordshire League Division Two.

Town spokesman Carl Lambert said: “Keiran Fish, Gaz Edwards, Dean Morris and Mike Powell were superb against Harold. Bright Adam Everall ran their socks off and Chris Patton ran himself into the ground.”
