Knowbury Women’s Institute take advantage of Paddy Power
BOXING coach Martin ‘Paddy’ Brennan has been running self-defence classes for the Knowbury Women’s Institute.
Paddy, who lives in Bleathwood, was the founder and head coach at Tenbury Amateur Boxing Club.
But the final bell rang out for Tenbury Boxing Club earlier this year and Paddy is now running a new club from his home.
“I had no choice but to pull out of Tenbury town centre after several funding applications fell through,” said Paddy.
Paddy has converted a building on his property in Bleathwood and the club is known as Paddy Brennan Boxing Academy and Fitness Centre.
Stuart ‘Bomber’ Lewis was the first boxer to fight under the new Paddy Brennan Boxing Academy name.
Lewis lost a tight contest, 35-33, in the Bill Meddings Memorial Cup on the Birmingham card against the UK All Stars Elite show.
“We are now having 170 people through the door each week and it’s a fulltime job,” said Paddy.
“I am running fitness classes for women and personal training and, the other week, I ran a selfdefence class at the Women’s Institute in Knowbury. Our place is a drop-in centre for people from the women’s institutes and for anyone else who fancies a chat.”
Tenbury Boxing Club had been based above the Bridge Inn since April 2009. However, the owner of the Bridge Inn, Bobby Webb, wanted to re-use the space being taken up by the club.
“My club is officially affiliated to the Amateur Boxing Association of England and there are exciting times ahead,” said Paddy.
