Manager Andrew Green hopes penalty shoot-out heartache will inspire Bishops Castle Town in the Shropshire FA Challenge Cup
BOSS Andrew Green is hoping last season’s heartache will inspire Bishops Castle Town in the Shropshire FA Challenge Cup.
Castle crashed out in the semifinals last term – when it was called the Shropshire FA Junior Challenge Cup.
Dan Dawson missed from the spot as Castle suffered a shock penalty shoot-out defeat to lower-graded Claverley.
Green’s men host Albrighton Juniors this Saturday in the first round of this season’s competition.
“Dan was in tears in the changing rooms after that game,” recalled Green.
“But had we taken our chances in that game, we could have walked into the final.”
Dawson missed Castle’s disappointing 3-0 defeat last weekend at Wroxeter Rovers in the Mercian League Division One.
Green said: “Hopefully, Dan will play this weekend – he texted me last Saturday morning to tell me he was feeling ill.
“Dan has been our best player at the back this season and we missed him.” Castle were also without Gaz Bromley and jointmanager Lee Davies.
“We did well in the first half but Wroxeter scored straight after the interval and when their second goal went in, our heads dropped,” said Green.
“I was thinking about putting out a weakened team but, after last Saturday’s display, I am going to stick with my best 11.”
Newcastle host Dawley Town in the cup, while Wayne Whitbread’s Clee Hill United entertain Shewsbury United.
Ludlow Town Colts are also in first-round action, travelling to Hopesgate United, while Brown Clee are at home to Highley Miners Welfare.
