Former Ludlow schoolboy Jonny Hill picked for England Under-20 rugby squad
FORMER Ludlow schoolboy Jonny Hill has been named in the England Under-20 rugby squad.
Hill, who plays for Gloucester Academy, is part of the 32-man England squad hoping to win a fourth consecutive Six Nations title.
The forward will also be determined to help England defend their IRB Junior World Championship trophy in New Zealand next June.
England head coach Stuart Lancaster said: “This season’s England Under-20 squad is a strong one with lots of experience, the amount of competition for places in each position reflects well on the work the regional academies at the clubs are doing.”
Hill was a young player at Luctonians and their club administrator, Simon Green- Price, believes the Ludlow starlet can make a huge impact.
“Jonny has been training with Gloucester’s first-team squad over the summer,” explained Green-Price.
“Jonny played junior rugby at Luctonians throughout the age g roups before representing Hereford and Worcester,” added Green-Price.
Hill played for Gloucester United against Worcester Cavaliers on Monday night in the opening Aviva Premiership A League fixture of the new season.
The forward came on as a 60thminute replacement as hosts Gloucester comfortably defeated Worcester 34-3.
Green-Price coached Hill at under-16 level and, at 6ft 8in tall, he says the youngster has size, pace and skill.
“Jonny has got some rugby pedig ree - I think his uncle played rugby league for England,”
“We suggested that Jonny went to Hartpury Colle ge to give rugby a try.
“We thought he could really give the rugby a go and, if it didn’t work for him, then he had lost nothing and could return to farming.
“He played for me in the Hereford and Worcester under-19 team and, hopefully, is on course to achieve the potential that we all saw in him.”
