Cleobury Mortimer Rugby Club appoint Allan Shields as new skipper
CLEOBURY Mortimer Rugby Club’s new skipper Allan Shields wants a season of consolidation.
Cleobury had a traumatic campaign last season, suffering relegation from Midlands Three West (North).
Shields has taken over the captaincy and Cleobury travel to Birmingham Exiles this Saturday in the first round of the North Midlands Vase.
“We have some players coming back and we are hoping that things will settle down,” said Shields.
Bishops Castle are starting life without kicker Elliot Brooks, who has joined Herefordshire side Luctonians in National League Two North.
Jack Holloway is the new captain for Castle, who travel to Harborne this Saturday in the first round of the Vase.
Former skipper Pete Bevan says it’s Castle’s first Vase adventure for several seasons.
“Pete Hughes is back this year but we have lost Brooks, who scored a lot of points for us,” said Bevan.
“We have got some excellent young lads in Justin Haycock and Jamie Owen.”
Castle warmed up for the season with a 19-8 friendly win over newly-formed Church Stretton.
Full-back Matt Isley, Andy Dale and Owen crossed for Castle, while Holloway slotted two conversions.
Ludlow are scheduled to host Old Saltleians this Saturday in the first round of the North Midlands Shield.
Meanwhile, Ludlow have been drawn away to Droitwich in the first round of the Midlands Intermediate Cup on September 28. Cleobury Mortimer will travel to Telford Hornets in the first round of the Midlands Junior Vase and Tenbury have been handed a trip to Woodrush. Both ties are scheduled for September 28.
