Cleobury Mortimer Cricket Club slip to third spot in Worcestershire County League Division Two
CLEOBURY Mortimer have slipped to third spot - but captain Ben Griffiths isn’t giving up on his side’s promotion dream.
The villagers are eight points behind second-placed Chaddesley Corbett with just two matches remaining in the Worcestershire County League Division Four.
Cleobury were just one wicket shy of defeating table-topping Old Vigornians in a rain-affected clash last Saturday.
“It’s not in our hands now but we will give the last matches our best shot,” said Griffiths.
“The wet weather has gone against us a bit this season.
“We have beaten Chaddesley twice but they have had fewer matches rained off.”
He added: “With Tenbury being relegated from Division Two - if we could go up - we would be in the same division as them.”
James Manley was in outstanding form in the hosts’ winning draw against Old Vigornians, striking 71 in Cleobury’s 175 all out.
Manley then took 4-28 and Dave Shorter snapped up 3-40 as Old Vigornians replied with 128- 9 from 37 overs.
“We came off due to the rain after 31 overs of Vigornians’ innings and then returned to the field for just 18 balls,” said Griffiths.
“We couldn’t take the final wicket which would have kept us in second spot.”
Cleobury travel to third-frombottom Barnards Green 3rd this Saturday and will host bottomclub West Malvern in their final match.
