Boxer Craig Morris, from Ludlow, crowned new Midland Counties open senior light middleweight champion

BOXER Craig Morris has been crowned the new Midland Counties open senior champion.

The 20-year-old from Ludlow deservedly triumphed in the 71kg light middleweight section at the senior ABAE open championships in Coventry.

It is Morris’ first season in the senior ABAE open championships and the ex-Ludlow Boxing Club member showed his pedigree.

Morris was cheered on by his footballing team-mates from Woofferton Colts as he secured a 4-1 decision from the judges.

Shropshire's promising light middleweight ace now boxes for Lions ABC in Staffordshire and defeated 22-year-old Craig Sheldon, from Willenhall ABC, in the final.

Morris was frustrated by some of Sheldon’s boxing in the opening round.

However, Morris picked up the pace in the second round and increased his work-rate to trouble his rival.

Morris then bossed Sheldon in the third round and the referee kept a close eye on the action in the final stages as the former Ludlow boxer went on the attack.

Morris, who enjoyed huge success as a novice boxer, was a clear winner of the bout and picked up his maiden Midland senior vest. He thanked his family for their support and his friends from Woofferton Colts.

Morris also thanked Naughton Dunn for the hire of the Ludlow Community Bus which allowed a crowd to support his Midlands title success.
