Club’s shock as crash kills motor racing fan

FRIENDS of a Little Hereford motoring enthusiast have spoken of their shock after he died following a road accident.

Mark Joseland, aged 77, was driving an Audi TT last Wednesday (June 17) when it was in collision with a Mercedes 4x4 on the A49, near to the Salway Arms, Woofferton, at around 11.20am.

Mr Joseland, a lifetime member of the Midland Automobile Club (MAC), based in Shelsley Walsh, was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital where he died later that day.

John Moody, president of the MAC, said Mr Joseland was a member of the club for more than half a century, spending 21 years as secretary and the last 10 years as archivist.

“I have known him for at least 40 years,” said Mr Moody. “If I ever asked him a question about who did what on a certain day years ago, it may take him a few minutes, but he would come back with the answer.

“I didn’t even need to check as I knew the information would have been right.”

Mr Joseland had been custodian and curator of the extensive MAC archive for many years.

At the time of his death, he was actively involved in planning the transfer of the archive into a purposemade room at the Shelsley Walsh courtyard complex.

“He was a hugely respected and important member of the team and he will be missed,” said Mr Moody.

“His knowledge was incredible but he was also one hell of a nice bloke, you wouldn’t hear people being critical of him. He was respected throughout the country.”

Mr Moody said Mr Joseland was also an authority on Frazer Nash cars, having been captain of the club and also raced himself, taking park in hill climbing and trials.

Mr Joseland, leaves behind a wife Avril.

Mr Moody added that tributes will be paid to him at the next hill climb event at Shelsley Walsh on Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5.
