PLANS for the long-awaited toilet development in Tenbury Wells have been finalised by residents and councillors.

Local people sent around 70 letters to Malvern Hills District Council before Will McMorran's unique three building design emerged as the favourite for new conveniences to be built on Market Street after previous ones were washed away in the 2007 floods.

Seven entries were scrutinised during a consultation period at the library before the Bromyard architect’s concept for separate structures housing ladies, mens and disabled facilities won.

Mr McMorran said: “I thought Tenbury has got some lovely little groups of idiosyncratic buildings, like the Pump Rooms, so I thought how can we make this another group? I think new buildings should grow out of their historic surroundings.”

The idea also won unanimous approval from a committee of council members and officers formed to make the final decision.

Dictrict councillor Phil Grove said: “It’s the one that was the will of the town and the people of Tenbury so we’re very pleased with that.”

Foundations for the new development will be completed by December in-line with the construction of a retaining wall nearby, while the rest of the building is expected to follow early in 2009.

Mayor Richard Jones said: “The big thing is that we’re getting three loos for the price of one.”
