Council works on long term solution to flooding problems

Malvern Hills District Council has hired a Birmingham-based consultancy, BWM Consultants, to carry out a comprehensive assessment of flooding issues in the district.

As part of its continuing response to summer floods the authority is stepping up its resources in order to map out and deal with land drainage problems.

Phase one, which is due to draw to a close mid- September, involves parish council's marking on locality maps the key areas that are most prone to flooding and suggesting potential reasons using their local knowledge of the area. Once all the maps have been returned, BWB will then move onto phase two of the investigation. This second phase will see the consultants visit and assess the 'hot spots', as suggested by the parish councils, and then establish which agency, authority or individual has overall responsibility for maintenance or management of the area. Following on from this a list of prioritised actions, which will also detail responsibility for action, will be put together.

Councillor David Watkins, portfolio holder for environmental control explains: "This project will result in a detailed action plan of what needs to be done and when in order to minimise the risk of flooding in our district. Although we started work on this project a few months ago, the outcomes from the last few days demonstrate that this project is now more important than ever. We cannot control the weather but we can work out what the long term solutions to flooding are, and then ensure the necessary actions are carried out."
