ON a night of disappointment for the Conservatives, Tenbury MP Harriett Baldwin enjoyed holding one of her party’s safest seats in the country.

She returned as the Member of Parliament for West Worcestershire for the third consecutive time.

Harriett Baldwin polled 34,703 votes, securing a majority of over 21,000. She secured more than 61 per cent of the vote on a record high turnout of 76 per cent.

"I repeat my pledge to keep working hard for local people to improve our local infrastructure, support our wonderful NHS and deliver the right conditions to allow our local economy to grow,“ said Harriett Baldwin.

She thanked people for voting for her and the high turnout.

“I want to thank the Malvern Hills District Council team who managed the election and worked hard through the night to complete the count so efficiently.

"It is a privilege to be elected again and I look forward to returning to Westminster to continue my work as a strong voice for all the people of West Worcestershire."

West Worcestershire is considered a very safe Conservative seat and Harriett Baldwin increased her vote compared with 2015 by more than five per cent.

But the biggest surprise was that Labour candidate Samantha Charles came a comfortable second with a jump of more than 10 per cent in the vote for her party in the constituency compared with two years ago.

Edward McMillan-Scott, the experienced Liberal Democrat who would normally have been expected to become second was relegated to third place.

Natalie McVey, the Green party candidate was third but the biggest loser was UKIP whose candidate Mike Savage came bottom of the poll with a 12 per cent drop in the vote for his party compared with 2015.

Harriett Baldwin, who was Minister for Defence Procurement in the last Government and a Treasury Minister in the administration led by David Cameron, had not commented on the national result.
