I love all sport but football is my first love.

Admittedly, as an Aston Villa fan, it is hard to like a sport that can cause such pain.

My daughter shares the same passion.

However, when asked to name her hero it will not be a fancy Dan badge kisser.

Oh no, not for her.

She will talk at length about Fran Kirby?

Who? Fran Kirby a talented Chelsea Ladies goal scorer; a key member of the squad that finished third in the Women’s World Cup.

England finished third in a football World Cup? Really?

Yes, England really do have a great national football team. Paradoxically, in the male-centric world of football, England’s women have hit greater heights than their men have in decades.

Unbelievably, though, you are still more likely to get bitten by Luis Suarez than be coached by a woman.

The high-profile case of Eva Caneiro at Chelsea and David Moyes’ remarks in a post-match interview did little to encourage girls into football.

Last month Baroness Sue Campbell recently launched the FA strategy to double participation of girls in football, double the number of fans and enable consistent success on the world stage by 2020.

Thank goodness that women’s football is now becoming a focus for our sporting, social and political agendas.

Such thinking makes perfect sense if sport really is to be the relentless pursuit of excellence.

Our Price family football journey will take me and my daughter to Holland this summer to see England compete in the 2017 European Women’s Championship.

Come on England!
