THERESA May has been in office for only a short time, but our new Prime Minister has been busy, visiting Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Germany, France, Poland and Slovakia.

She's set up two new government departments - the Ministry for Exiting the European Union and the Ministry for International Trade.

These two important new ministries, headed by David Davis and Dr Liam Fox respectively, will work to make Brexit a success by focusing on free trade and market access for business.

I am delighted that, locally, Robin Walker and Mark Garnier were appointed as ministers to serve in these government departments.

Together with Sajid Javid as Communities Secretary, it means that the Worcestershire voice will be heard loud and proud in Westminster.

I hope that, together, we are able to make significant progress towards some of our important aims - better transport links, more inward investment and each minister waving the flag for Worcestershire across the globe.

My job moved from the Treasury to the Ministry of Defence to be in charge of buying the right kit for our armed forces and ensuring it is properly supported. The first priority of government is keeping our nation safe and secure so it was heartening to see such a large majority of MPs from both sides of the House voting to renew our nuclear deterrent. This is vital at a time when the threats to our country are growing.

My main focus will be the strategic defence and security review - a comprehensive assessment of what we are doing and what we will do to keep Britain safe, including an equipment plan to invest £178 billion to back our Armed Forces, counter-terrorism police and intelligence agencies with the resources they need.

The Minister for Defence Procurement task was done previously by neighbouring MPs Sir Peter Luff and then Philip Dunne. Theirs are big shoes to fill but I took advice from them both ahead of my first meetings at the ministry. I have also been fortunate to be on the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which has shown me how many and varied are the demands on our service men and women, and how we must always be prepared for the unexpected in warfare.

It is vital that we get quality and value for every pound spent on our brave armed forces.
