FOOTBALL. A sport which was first played, in one form or another, over 4,500 years ago. Yet it endures and is to this day one of the most popular and heavily supported sports worldwide.

Football is both governed by tradition and filled with surprises; within it, nothing is certain. The excitement and passion felt by a crowd is second to none, whether they cheer in unison over an impressive goal or merely oppose a controversial refereeing decision. Multiple generations hold their breath in anticipation as they cluster around waiting for the final whistle, the final score.

Most wonderful of all, even those who would never describe themselves as ‘football supporters’ become caught up in the thrill of a close title race. This season, Leicester winning the League in such a spectacular fashion has captured the hearts of millions. It has made people realise that in the right circumstances absolutely anything can happen; it has given hope to hundreds of similar teams.

Similarly, Hereford Football Club, recently formed when Hereford United became unviable, have achieved something their predecessors could never claim – they’re going to Wembley! Having fought their way to the final of the FA Vase, they’ve outdone around 535 other teams and won themselves a trip to the iconic stadium. Whatever the outcome, the story is truly inspirational and it’s the experience of a lifetime for the Hereford players and their loyal fans.

The supporters stand by their clubs through thick and thin, through joy and disappointment, through despair and tragedy. What happened at Hillsborough was something that can never be forgotten or rectified. However, recent developments have shown us above all the supportive nature of the football community. They have shown us the power a nation standing together has to bring change.

Football truly is a beautiful game.
