AN attempt will be made to try and find a way around the road block that is holding up the completion of work to improve Tenbury town centre.

After a troubled first phase to the improvements this year, there is still no start date for the second part.

This is because a significant part of the cost is expected to come from Tesco when the supermarket chain begins the construction of the promised supermarket on the former auction yard site.

But although the troubled supermarket chain still says that it plans to come to Tenbury, there is still no start date nearly six years after the scheme was first mooted.

Now Worcestershire County Council, which is carrying out the town centre improvements, has pledged to look at ways in which the scheme can be started before Tesco arrive.

However, this will still depend upon a firm commitment from Tesco and a promise that they will pay up eventually.

“I will continue to press Tesco on when they will start work,” said Ken Pollock who represents Tenbury on Worcestershire County Council.

“In the meantime, we have been exploring ways in which we might bring forward phase two of the public realm work along Teme Street, using some other sources of finance, based upon a commitment from Tesco that they will go ahead at some stage.

“This urgency applies most particularly with regard to Tenbury Transport Trust who stand to receive a grant of £95,000 over five years, once they go ahead.”
