A CATHEDRAL choir is to sing at St Michael’s College, near Tenbury, at the weekend.

Hereford Cathedral Choir will be singing a special choral evensong at St Michael’s College, on Saturday May 2 at 3.30 pm for the Trustees of the Ouseley Trust.

The trust is gathering at the college as part of the celebrations marking the 190th anniversary of the birth of Canon Sir Frederick Gore Ouseley, founder of the college and one time canon precentor of Hereford Cathedral.

"We are delighted to be able to take part in this service,’ said Geraint Bowen, organist and director of music at Hereford Cathedral, ‘not least as Ouseley was so instrumental in bringing significant changes to English choral music and its role in cathedrals.

"When he started to become involved in church and cathedral music, standards were at a very low ebb but, by his quest for excellence at Hereford and through his establishment of St Michael’s College at Tenbury Wells, he demonstrated what could be achieved and how services could be enhanced through high quality music.

"What we sing today at Hereford is, in no small way, based on his vision."

The service, which is open to all, will consists of pieces specially chosen for their Tenbury connections, with works by Daniel Purcell, Thomas Tomkins and Ouseley himself.
