THIS old photograph show Tenbury Wells around the time of the outbreak of the Second World War.

The picture, supplied by English Heritage, was taken in 1939 although we do not know if this was before or after the start of the war.

The town certainly looks peaceful enough and many of the landmarks still in the town today can be seen.

At the foreground of the photo is the River Teme flowing under the bridge that leads into the town from Burford.

The Bridge public house can also be seen in the foreground, more than 20 years before The Beatles famously played there, as well as the cattle market where Tesco has gained planning permission to build a new supermarket.

There are tennis courts seen in the mid-ground and a careful glimpse at the photo is rewarded with sight of the Pump Rooms towards the end of Teme Street.

An interesting aspect of Teme Street is the number of cars parked up the side of the road. Other than that Tenbury's main street looks relatively empty.
