NEXT year will see Tenbury turned into a building site for many months but the town mayor says ‘bring it on.’ Councillor George Price says that all being well 2014 will mean the end of a long wait by people in the town.
The work will be linked to the building of the new Tesco supermarket on the old auction yard site.
It is claimed the store will create more than 100 full and part time jobs and be completed in time for Christmas 2014.
The project was first discussed at a public meeting in May 2010 but has suffered long delays.
Planning issues are the main cause of the delay but Tesco also put the project back from its original schedule.
The Tesco scheme split the town but Coun Price says that he has always been in favour.
“I believe that Tesco will be good for Tenbury and its businesses,”
said Coun Price.
“It will bring people into the town and they will be able to explore what else Tenbury has to offer. The whole affair has dragged on for far too long and I am sure most people will be glad to see them get on with it.”
The start of work on the Tesco development will also fire the starting pistol on work to improve footpaths and the public areas in the town.
This is linked to the work on the former Cattle Market site as Tesco will be picking up some of the bill for improvements in the town.
Tenbury experienced major construction work in early 2012 when the Teme Bridge was closed and repaired and the Re gal Cinema underwent a major refurbishment.
