KIND-HEARTED customers and members at the Co-op in Ronkswood, Worcester have raised more than £1,400 to support the Worcestershire Young Carers project at YSS.

The money will be used to provide clubs and activities for young people aged between seven and 25 who help to look after a parent, guardian or sibling within their home, who is ill or has a disability.

Generous customers at the store helped to raise the money as part of the Co-op’s Local Community Fund, which supports local causes by donating one per cent of selected own-brand product sales, together with money raised from carrier bag sales.

The Worcestershire Young Carers project supports Young and Young Adult Carers within the local Worcestershire community by funding trips, activities and monthly club sessions, providing young people with time and space away from what can often be a difficult home environment.

Neil Phillips, YSS senior keyworker overseeing the Worcestershire Young Carers project, said: “Thanks to generous donations from members of the public, we have been able to provide a huge variety of trips and activities for young carers in Worcestershire.

“From a trip to the seaside which was, for many, the first chance to have a holiday, to visiting the pantomime, taking part in a pottery class or experiencing the cinema, money raised for the Worcestershire Young Carers project at YSS ensures that we are able to continue to provide children and young people with the opportunity to have fun and have a break from their caring responsibilities.

“This is the second year that the Co-op has supported our work and we are absolutely thrilled to have received such a generous amount.

“On behalf of everyone at YSS and our young carers I’d like to say a huge thanks to the hundreds of customers and members who have helped to raise this fantastic total.”

The Worcestershire Young Carers project currently works with more than 400 carers across the county, helping them to receive support and enjoy new experiences away from their home environments.
