A ROAD in the town will close for around seven weeks to enable the reconstruction of a wall.

A section of Abbey Road, in Malvern, from Wells Road to College Road will shut on Friday.

The closure is expected to last for 46 days and residents are concerned that it will cause traffic chaos.

Workers will repair a stone retaining wall while the street is shut between May 19 and July 6.

One man, who lives in Abbey Road, said: "Over the bank holiday weekend signs turned up in Abbey Road saying they were going to close it for seven weeks.

"The signs have been put up by a private contractor.

"Unless they have big signs up in Abbey Road people will go down there and have a two-mile detour.

"If they close it for seven weeks people will have a nightmare. People will be severely inconvenienced. It will affect Malvern Theatres."

An announcement for the road closure was also published in the Malvern Gazette on April 20.

However some residents believe the council has failed to properly inform people about the closure ahead of the road shutting.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: "Worcestershire County Council has followed due process for this road closure.

"The closure has been advertised in the press and public notices.

"Works are due to take place between the May 19 and the July 6 to repair a damaged retaining wall, which is supporting a highway."
