AN unsuspecting Kidderminster couple received star treatment on their 70th wedding anniversary cruise as they were filmed for Croatian TV.

William Bennet, 92, and his wife Sylvia, 89, were “treated like royalty” on a two-week Dalmatian Coast holiday with their family.

The couple celebrated their remarkable milestone aboard the MV Emmanuel, where the ship’s crew called in the Croatian National TV to mark the occasion.

They spent their final week at the Astarea Hotel, where the couple were able to take in the picturesque coastal views and watch themselves on TV.

Crew and locals congratulated the couple, with one saying they were “honouring their country” by celebrating there.

They were also stopped by people in the streets who had seen their TV appearance as their celebration continued.

William said: "The experience was out of this world. We were really treated like royalty.”

Joining the two on their travels were two of their five children, Sylvia and Andrew and spouses Richard and Ann.

They also enjoyed opening cards from their 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

William and Sylvia were married on April 17, 1948 at St Johns church in Wolverley.

The two were initially in contact as pen pals, with William serving in the Merchant Navy from 1943 to 1947 and Sylvia working in a care home.

Their first meeting was outside the care home in July 1947 after William returned from his naval service.

William also shared the secret to an enduring marriage. He said: “It’s all about give and take.

"It's about cherishing the little things and not taking anything for granted."

The couple previously marked their 65th anniversary with blessings at their wedding church, complete with a horse a carriage.

William and Sylvia’s next big celebration will be their double birthday on June 1.
