A ‘VIKING’ has become Wolverley’s Carnival Queen following a sun-drenched traditional May Day Fayre.

Visitors and residents from Wolverley enjoyed a day of fun on the warmest May Day for 40 years with re-enactment group Svartland Vikings providing their living history camp and putting on demonstrations for those in attendance.

And it was Svartland Vikings member, 24-year-old Sophie Caldwell, who was crowned Wolverley Carnival Queen after wowing judges Val Barlow, John Hart and last year’s winner Lissy Hicks.

Three Wolverley Primary School pupils also impressed the panel and filled up the rest of the positions on the royal consort.

Madison Gines, aged seven, was named Rosebud while nine-year-old Macey Phillips is the Carnival Princess. Eight-year-old Oscar Phillips was awarded the title of Little Lord.

Among the other attractions on the day included Wyre Forest Archers, face painting, a coconut shy, a host of refreshments, a welly wanging contest won by Martin Allen and a stall put on by the newly formed litter picking group Wolverley Wombles.

The villages own ‘Snow Queen’ and ‘Green Man’ were also in attendance to signal the end of winter and the start of summer.

Charles Sherrey, Chairman of the Wolverley Carnival Team, said: “This was our 10th Wolverley Traditional May Day Fayre and we were lucky enough to have the sun shining down on us in what has been the warmest May Day weekend for over 40 years.

“It was yet another successful event for the village and its residents.

“We were very fortunate again to have Svartland Vikings join us with their living history camp, along with their wonderful demonstrations of combat drill.

“They also involved the children by showing them in the arena how the drill is performed and letting them look at the armour and swords that were used by Vikings.

“A big thank you to all the stallholders, attractions and groups who attended our annual event.”

Wolverley Village Carnival and Fete will take place on Saturday, July 7.
