RESTORATION and repair of the spire at St James' Church Harvington is nearing completion.

The work to the grade 1 listed building began in September and is due to be completed this month.

The work involves the re-pointing of high level stonework, treatment of wood and repair and replacement of panels which protect the spire.

The work has also involved the restoration of the clock face and the weathervane at the top of the spire and is being carried out by Stone Technical Services of Darlington who have also worked frequently on St Paul's Cathedral and the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

The work has been funded by grants from several charitable trusts including Welcome to our Future, Allchurches Trust, A H Lynall Foundation, Laslett's Charity, Worcestershire and Dudley Historic Churches Trust, Garfield Weston and the Edward Cadbury Charitable Trust.

Donations from church members and village residents have also been helpful.

The restoration should keep the spire in good condition for worship for at least the next hundred years.
