ANOTHER application has been submitted to demolish a historic Rubery pub - this time with plans to build a three-storey care home.

The former Cock Inn pub on Rubery Lane has been the subject of repeated failed demolition attempts since it closed four years ago.

Unique Pub Properties and Malvern Estates Plc, who own the site, had their plans for a 12-property housing development spurned in 2016, and withdrew a second application last year.

An arson attack at the derelict building completely destroyed the roof last October, and now Malvern Homes Ltd are back with a further application to transform the site into a care home consisting of 68 beds and creating a minimum of 60 jobs.

A planning statement read: "The Cock Inn has been closed for approximately three years and has recently suffered serious fire damage.

"It was marketed for at least 18 months prior to 2017 which was when the applicant acquired the site.

"Considering the extensive fire damage and the long-term vacancy, it can therefore be concluded the public house is no longer suitable for continued use.

"The proposed development would bring a vacant, under-utilised, brownfield site back into a suitable and sustainable use."

A consultation on the plan closes on May 31. Comments can be made at birmingham.gov.uk/planningonline using planning reference 2018/03511/PA.
