IN a storyline straight from Roy of the Rovers, a student teacher asked for time off from Ledbury Primary to play in an FA cup tie, and he ended up scoring his team's only goal.

Calvin Dinsley, aged 27, is coming to end of his first six week placement at Ledbury Primary and, last Friday, was he given permission to travel and prepare for Hereford's cup clash with Fleetwood.

Not only that, the midfielder ended up scoring the opening goal, which was in fact his first goal of the season.

The outcome of the game was a draw with Fleetwood, with the prospect of a replay now looming and, if all goes to plan, further FA cup success for Hereford FC.

Mr Dinsley, who moved to Hereford from Gloucester City in the spring, says he's really enjoying his time at Hereford but has been caught on the hop by the attention his goal has generated,

He said: "You start to appreciate how much Hereford FC means to people locally."

And Mr Dinsley added: "The club's on the up at the moment."

Mr Dinsley is also in no doubt about how much his success means to the Year 3 youngsters he has been teaching, and to the school as a whole.

He said: "I'm really enjoying Ledbury Primary, and the school's been very supportive. They even celebrated my goal on assembly, after giving me a day off for the FA fixture."

Mr Dinsley, who hails from Worcester, is currently studying for his PGSE, having taken his first degree in sports therapy at Worcester University a few years ago.

Now, despite his success in footfall, he has set his career sights firmly on teaching, although he hopes to also continue playing for Hereford.

But Mr Dinsley said: "You never known what will happen with football, from season to season."

Mr Dinsley attended the Elgar Technical College in Worcester, which is now Tudor Grange Academy, and before then, Ronkswood Junior School.
