A MOTION will be submitted calling on the leader of Bromsgrove District Council to resign after weeks of delays to waste collection services.

Labour councillor and ward member for Rock Hill, Michael Thompson, says he will submit a motion at the next full council meeting later this month asking for leader Cllr Geoff Denaro's immediate resignation.

The call comes after staff sicknesses and a council overspend on agency workers resulted in delayed bin collections across the district.

Cllr Thompson said: "I originally proposed a motion to call for the resignation of chief executive Kevin Dicks. However the council blocked this motion, so I have no other option than to now ask for the resignation of the council leader.

"The summer refuse crisis could have been avoided and is a case of clear mismanagement.

Bromsgrove Advertiser:

"The residents of Bromsgrove have paid for a service which, put simply, has not been delivered."

He added: "The council meeting is open to the public and I urge people to come and show their support for this motion.

"The people of Bromsgrove are tired of paying higher taxes and receiving unacceptable levels of service. It is time for a change."

The motion will call on the council to resolve that it 'no longer has confidence in its leader' and ask for his immediate resignation.

Cllr Geoff Denaro said on Thursday: "I received a full briefing today and have been told that there is no longer a backlog on general waste.

"There is a small backlog on recycling that will be collected on the next round.

"I will be explaining to full council later this month why this has happened."

Bromsgrove Advertiser:

A spokesman for Bromsgrove District Council added: "The motion proposed by Cllr Thompson was not blocked. He withdrew it.

"We have a duty to advise our members over the legalities and financial implications of any proposed motions and any subsequent consequences which could ensue.

"The leader of Bromsgrove District Council, Geoff Denaro, supports the chief executive and the officers in the work they are doing to put right the difficulties that have arisen with the refuse service.

"We thank residents sincerely for their patience and continued support.

The full council meeting will take place at Parkside in Market Street at 6pm on Wednesday, September 12.
