A PRISONER has been given a further jail sentence for his latest drug offence.

Ryan Harford admitted attempting to possess a controlled drug of class B, when he appeared by videolink at Worcester Magistrates Court.

Nicola Ritchie, prosecuting, said the 38-year-old was originally arrested by police in Worcester for another matter on August 1.

Miss Ritchie said when they found a quantity of amphetamines, the drugs were seized and he was also arrested for that offence.

Miss Ritchie explained that since the offence, the defendant had now been jailed and was at HMP Hewell after committing another set of offences.

She added Harford had a number of previous convictions. These included possession of Class A and B drugs, including cocaine, and drug dealing for which Harford was jailed.

Defending at the court last Thursday, Mark Sheward explained that Harford was being charged with attempted possession as the drugs seized had not be tested by police.

Mr Sheward pointed out he had helped police as he had admitted straight away they were amphetamines, asking for him to receive credit for this.

"Their value is £2, we all accept it was amphetamines" Mr Sheward said.

"He was arrested for another matter, which actually police took no further action on.

"This is very much a tidying up exercise."

Mr Sheward explained to magistrates he was due to be released from prison on October 6.

Magistrates gave Harford a five day prison sentence for the offence, which will run concurrently meaning he will be released on the same day.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115, which he will have to pay within 28 days. Harford pleaded for this not to be given, as he said he had no money to pay the surcharge, but magistrates explained they legally had to order the payment of this.

Magistrates also ordered for the forfeiture and destruction of the amphetamines.
