YET another Hereford resident has fallen foul of the infamous Widemarsh Street kerb and broken her wrist after tripping on it.

Ross Road resident Janet Curtis, 80, was out shopping with her daughter earlier this month when she tripped on the low-lying kerb outside Primark.

She is calling on Herefordshire Council to take more responsibility over its actions and do something about the accident hotspot.

She said: “I twisted and broke my wrist and as I was lying there another woman wet down beside me. I couldn’t believe it.

“The council needs to do something about that street. Maybe they should make it more of a pathway and only allow delivery vehicles.

“Speaking to the nurse at the hospital she told me that other people had fallen and suffered a fractured skull after falling there.

“I’m very active walker and gardener and for the past week or more I’ve not been able to drive or leave the house much.

“I was out shopping with my daughter on her birthday and the fall really ruined the day. It’s only the second time I’ve broken a bone.”

But Herefordshire Council says residents need to be more vigilant and that the current kerb ‘promotes safety at all times of the day’ despite more than 100 reports of falls along Widemarsh Street since it was redeveloped.

The council says the kerb is needed because it is open to traffic during certain hours of the day and pedestrianised at others.

However, there is no such kerb on High Street which leads on from Widemarsh Street and was redeveloped with a very similar visual design.

A council spokesperson said: “Widemarsh Street is open to traffic before 10.30am and after 4.30pm but is pedestrianised at other times.

“This means that measures must be in place to make clear the extent of the road for motorists, while not excluding full use of the area by pedestrians.

“The refurbishment of Widemarsh Street included extensive safety research and consideration, and it was decided that the kerb currently in place provided the best possible means of promoting safety at all times of day.

“We are aware that there have been some trips and falls on Widemarsh Street, and we urge pedestrians to please be vigilant to reduce the risk of accidents.

“The safety of both motorists and pedestrians is our top priority and we will continue to monitor Widemarsh Street to ensure the most effective safety measures are in place.”
