A KIDDERMINSTER couple are about to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary, marking the milestone with a Mediterranean cruise.

Alfred Waldron, 81, and his wife Maureen, 80, will reach 60 years of marriage on July 26, and will embark on a whistle-stop cruise with friends.

The couple were wed at Holy Trinity Church, Smethwick on July 26, 1958 after Alfred returned from work in the forces.

The couple previously returned to the church to renew their wedding vows in honour of their 40th wedding anniversary.

The sweethearts met in 1953 in their home town of Smethwick where they were both born and regularly went dancing together at school hall events.

Alfred and Maureen also developed a passion for the cinema, where they shared movie moments together throughout the years.

Throughout their working lives, Alfred became an engineer in the metal and jewellery industry, and Maureen worked for the Forward Trust and HSBC bank.

The couple are looking forward to visiting destinations such as Rome, Gibraltar, Monte Carlo and Barcelona as they set sail on their two-week cruise.

Alfred said: “It’s a wonderful feeling looking back, and such a pleasure.”

“Sometimes I wonder where all the years have gone.”

“we’ve been very fortunate over the years and we have become closer and closer.”
