A SOLDIER will complete a 'burpee mile' to raise money for a beach chair for a disabled 11-year-old.

Mark Wall, 47, a serving soldier with the 104th Regiment Royal Artillery, 214 (Worcestershire) Battery, has been in the army for 32 years. Mr Wall will complete a tough physical challenge to raise money to buy a special beach chair for a friends daughter, Ruby Crowther.

Mr Wall of Lower Wick said: "Ruby is a very bright, very beautiful 11 year old. I want to do something really special for Ruby and getting her a beach chair will enable her to experience the joy of the seaside."

Ruby Crowther, from Lower Broadheath, Worcester, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2 which affects every part of her body except from her diaphragm.

On October 11, 2017 Ruby was admitted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital to have her scoliosis fixed with metal rods as it was making life very difficult for her. In hospital she developed sepsis. After three weeks on the ward and numerous operations she was admitted to intensive care in critical condition where she remained for 52 days while her mum, dad and sister waited for her to respond.

She eventually came out of intensive care and she was brought home on December 22, 2017.

Mr Wall said: "It has taken a huge amount of care to get her back to her chatty, bubbly self."

Mr Wall said: "Deciding on how to raise money was easy it had to be something that would take me out of my comfort zone, something that would hurt me. I can run a marathon or cycle the length of the country but I wanted something that would test me....that's when i came up with The burpee Mile. 1 whole mile of burpees."

On Saturday, May 26, Mr Wall will do a mile of burpee's around Worcester Racecourse, starting at 9am and aiming to finish as quick as he can.
