A DRUG user broke into a friend’s flat and stole his PlayStation 4 to fund his habit.

Robert Sutton admitted to charges of dwelling burglary and theft when appearing before magistrates via video link from prison on Thursday.

The 30-year-old showed “no sophistication in terms of how he enters the property”, according to his defence solicitor Mark Turnbull.

The court heard that the defendant, who is currently serving time in HMP Hewell for another offence, cut his thumb when he smashed the kitchen window to gain entry.

Traces of blood in the ground floor flat on Philipscote, Evesham, helped investigators pinpoint Sutton, who was homeless at the time of the offence.

Kerri Lovegrove, prosecuting, said the property owner, Chris James, left home at 2pm on October 20 last year to pick up his daughter from school.

Mr James did not return to the flat until 1.30pm on October 21, when he saw a glass panel had been smashed.

His PlayStation was also found to be gone from his lounge, as were four games and a CCTV unit, which had all been located next to his TV.

Mrs Lovegrove said the victim, who also noticed blood on the floor, had said there were “no issues” with the defendant prior to the burglary, and he considered him a friend.

She said Mr James’ epilepsy has worsened since the incident, and his children are afraid to stay at the home.

Mr Turnball said his client, on the day of the offence, “knocks on the door, when he realises no one is in he goes around to the back of the property”.

He said Sutton was “using drugs at the time” and sold the console and games to “fund his habit” – while destroying the CCTV unit.

Due for release from prison on April 10, magistrates committed Sutton to crown court for sentencing on April 6.
