A RELIEVED Kidderminster grandad has given heartfelt thanks to paramedics who saved his grandson’s life following a horror car crash.

Luis Villegas, aged 11, was critically injured during the smash, which happened on the A448 Redditch to Bromsgrove highway at around 6.40pm on Sunday, March 4.

But medics told his grandfather Mac Day that had the ambulance - which was passing by when it came across the scene - not arrived to administer vital early treatment, Luis would almost certainly have died.

Mr Day also heaped praise on his other grandchildren – nine-year-old Alex and sister Carmen, aged seven – for how they coped with the traumatic incident.

The children, who all attend Franche Primary School, were travelling back to Kidderminster with their dad Miguel when the crash involving another car happened.

All four were rendered unconscious but Alex came round first and managed to rouse his sister and then his father to let them know what happened.

But Luis was trapped and had suffered a serious head injury and the family were unable to get him out.

Fortunately, paramedics arrived on the scene and raised the alarm with other emergency services. Fire crews worked to cut Luis free from the car.

All four were taken to hospital with Luis suffering a blood clot on the brain. He was operated on to remove the blood clot at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and induced into a coma. Luis remains in hospital with his mum Rebecca Swan by his bedside but is improving daily.

Mr Day said: “We are so lucky the ambulance came by when it did. Not only did they give early treatment, they raised the alarm. Doctors have been very blunt about it – had they not arrived, Luis would not be here now.

“All of the medics and emergency services are amazing people – we cannot thank them enough.

“I’m just so proud of Alex and Carmen and the way they reacted when it happened – they were so brave. They really should be given medals for their bravery.

“Alex actually suffered a broken wrist in the crash. To think he woke up to that scene and still reacted calmly is amazing.

“Luis is doing very well. He has regained consciousness and, although he can’t talk, he is making intelligent communication with his hands and eyes.”

The occupants of the other car included a 13-year-old girl who was uninjured and a 36-year-old woman treated at the scene.

West Mercia Police confirmed enquiries into the incident are ongoing and urged anyone with information to call 101 quoting incident number 542S of 4 March.
