A NEW petition has been set up, urging Bromsgrove District Council to 'save our sports hall, or build a new one', with more than 400 signatures collected in just six days.

Save Our Sports Hall campaigner and local mum Louise Humphries said: "We started the petition to keep the pressure on the council and make sure they either refurbish the Dolphin Centre or build a new sports hall.

"The danger is that if we don't, and this falls under the radar, I wouldn't be surprised if neither of these things happen.

"My boys both used to go to FootieBugs on a Saturday morning, I used to do circuits classes at North Bromsgrove and my dad does badminton there - so the whole family uses a sports hall.

"To lose that would be very bad for Bromsgrove."

The group's last petition received more than 1,700 signatures, but a new one was launched after plans to share a sports hall with North Bromsgrove High School were put on hold in November - days before the opening of Bromsgrove Sports and Leisure Centre.

Jayne Pickering, executive director of finance and resources at Bromsgrove District Council, said: “Negotiation continues for a shared use arrangement for the sports hall, but since the availability changed members have decided to reconsider the range of other options that may be available.

“A new report setting out the implications of the various options is now being put together for the consideration of members of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, and Cabinet and Council as may be necessary."
