AN iconic cycling tour will once again pass through the district as a major boost to businesses.

The penultimate stage of the OVO Tour of Britain will be passing through several areas of the Cotswolds with over 120 professional cyclists riding through.

They will enter the district via Charlbury and Shipton-Under-Wychwood and continue to Bourton-on-the-Water, before turning up the Fosse Way to Moreton-in-Marsh.

The riders will finish their journey through the rolling hills by turning towards Winchcombe and Cleeve Hill before ending on the Promenade in Cheltenham town centre.

Cotswold District Council Tourism Manager, Sally Graff, said: “Many local residents will be thrilled to see world-class cyclists up close.”

“Additionally, being part of the event should attract a lot of visitors who have not previously sampled the hospitality and attractions of the Cotswolds, and we will be in touch with businesses to make the most of this opportunity.”

Andy Sanders from Cotswolds Tourism Partnership added: “The Cotswolds is a superb place for visitors and cyclists of all abilities, offering wonderful countryside, attractions and plenty of cafes and pubs for refreshment.

“The towns and picturesque villages along the route will be excited to welcome the race and we know it will generate lots of interest in cycling now and into the future.

“We are hoping that businesses and communities will engage in the event and it will showcase all the area has to offer.”

The televised bike race is expected to increase tourism in the area and therefore serve as a cash boost for local businesses.

The District Council announced in January that they were supporting the bid to bring the leg to the area and contributed £10,000 to the cause.

OVO Energy Tour of Britain Race Director Mick Bennett added: “The OVO Energy Tour of Britain has passed through Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds on a number of occasions, but this will be the first stage to finish in the area.

“The race will showcase the area’s beautiful scenery before finishing in the centre of the spa town of Cheltenham.”

The race passes through the Cotswolds on Saturday September 9.
