A MAN has appeared in court after an incident in which a police officer was allegedly threatened with a knife in Worcester city centre.

Adam Merry, 26, appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court today (Monday) in connection with an incident in Sidbury on Saturday, when he allegedly lunged at PC Leech with a multi-tool knife.

Merry was charged with the possession of an offensive weapon, a multi-tool knife, and was remanded in custody.

The 26-year-old, of Rodborough Drive, in the Warndon area of the city, was also charged for breach of bail, namely a condition not to contact Bridie Watts.

He is also charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress, using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence and being in possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

No plea was entered by Merry, who will next appear in Worcester Crown Court on Monday April 24.

The charge relates to an incident in Portland Street in the Diglis area of Worcester, at around 4.30pm on the canal towpath near to the King's Head pub.

At one point 10 police vehicles were at the scene, and a section of Sidbury was closed for about three hours.

Merry is also set to appear at Worcester Magistrates Court on Monday, April 3, to answer a common assault charge, which he denies.

Superintendent for Worcestershire, Kevin Purcell, has asked for potential witnesses to Saturday's incident to come forward.

He said: "We understand that various people may have recorded the incident, and we would welcome any footage that is available."

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident 528S.
