A BY-ELECTION could finally be held to fill the seat left vacant following the death of Stourport’s longest serving councillor.

A notice of vacancy has been posted on Wyre Forest District Council’s website for the Areley Kings West ward of Stourport Town Council.

Stalwart councillor Maureen Mason served Stourport Town Council for 33 years as a Conservative member and held the Areley Kings West ward seat until her death on January 5, at the age of 71, following a short illness.

As well as being a member of the town council, Miss Mason also got elected on to Wyre Forest District Council for five years from 2003.

If by March 7, 10 electors write to the Returning Officer Ian Miller calling for an election to fill the vacancy, a ballot would be held. Should this happen, an election is likely to be held on May 4.

In January, heartbroken colleagues of Maureen Mason paid tribute to her hard work and dedication in the town.

Mayor of Stourport Ken Henderson, who represents the same ward, said: “Over the years Maureen has been an absolute gem for Areley Kings and Stourport, a real friend, colleague and mentor.

“I missed her presence during her illness and, when hearing of her death, I felt very sad. This was because I have lost a very dear friend, who gave great advice and support.”
