FREEZING fog enveloped most of Worcester this morning after the county was issued a severe weather warning.

And it seemed most people heeded the Met Office warning with no reports of severe crashed in the city.

However, the fog is set to return tonight (Tuesday) and stay until the about 11am the following morning.

While there was no travel disruption in the city centre, further afield, 100 flights were cancelled at Heathrow because of the freezing fog.

Tonight and tomorrow morning, we can see areas of freezing fog, some dense, are expected to form again during Tuesday evening and last into Wednesday morning.

The Met Office said the fog will become more widespread through the night, with icy patches on untreated roads and paths an additional hazard.

Travelling conditions will be difficult with journeys likely to take longer than usual and delays to air travel are possible.

The chief forecaster said: "Stagnant air will remain across the area, allowing fog to form readily.

"Frost deposited by the fog will give surfaces an icy covering which may be thick enough to make roads and pavements slippery."

Police urged drivers to make sure they defrost their car windscreens properly before setting off.

Officers with the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) stopped a driver in the city who hadn't cleared the frost from their windscreen.

The group tweeted a picture of the car and said: "In Worcester this driver thought he could see clearly enough to drive. Our patrol thought otherwise. Clear your windows properly please"

There are no weather warnings for the rest of the week with cold and windy days on Thursday and Friday, with sunny spells by day and frosts overnight.

Winds easing into Saturday but turning cloudier with some light rain in places according to The Met Office.
