A NEW project which brings together a number of organisations is aiming to prove there is 'no wrong door' for the county's young people.

The No Wrong Door project, funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner, aims to provide a single point for young people to access a youth worker and to provide information, support and guidance from a range of specialist agencies.

The HVOSS (Herefordshire Voluntary Organisations Support Service) project provides drop in sessions, appointments with specialist agencies, workshops, training and guidance to support young people with life issues.

Will Edwards, youth development officer with HVOSS, said: "For many young people, the first and biggest step is actually coming through the door. If someone comes and realises they have come to the wrong place that can be really off-putting.

"Now they come in and have a single point of access. We are finding, for example, that people are presenting as homeless but there are also other issues such as mental health or sexual health.

"We have then been able to signpost them to other organisations."

A total of 17 partner agencies and organisations from both voluntary and statutory sectors have agreed to work in collaboration with the project.

Services have initially been broken down into six main headings – CV writing and careers signposting, mental health support, positive youth activities, drug and alcohol cessation, family crisis and housing support and life skills development.

Elizabeth Shilcock, from the CLD Trust which provides counselling and other services to help improve the mental health of young people, said it was great to have a 'hub' where services could work together.

Alice Davies, a youth worker with HVOSS, added: "It's also about raising ambitions and aspirations. We are in rural Herefordshire and perhaps some people don't realise what's out there in terms of careers.

"It's about helping people to get back on track."

The No Wrong Door project can be found on Union Street and can be accessed between 10am and 4.30pm on weekdays.
