RETAILERS in Worcestershire have been urged to make sure they comply with a new law relating to tobacco displays, which kicks in next month.

From April 6 in-store displays must be covered and only open for as long as is reasonable to serve a customer, complete stock control, restock, staff training or conduct maintenance.

The ban on the display of tobacco products has been in place for large stores since 2012, but all retail outlets - including corner shops, petrol filling stations, pubs and clubs - will now need to take steps to ensure that tobacco products are not on open display.

Simon Wilkes, business manager for Worcestershire Regulatory Services Trading Standards, said: "The removal of tobacco products from retail display is seen as a key factor in driving down the level of underage sales of tobacco products.

"Evidence shows that eye-catching tobacco displays can promote smoking by the young, and undermine the resolve of those trying to give them up.

"For those retailers yet to make the change there is still time to get it right."
