TRIATHLON training is what will keep former local authority director focussed after completing 41 years' service.

Andy Fotherby began his career with Cotswold District Council in 1974 as a junior draughtsman and worked his way up through the organisation.

He reached directorate level by 2007 after serving as a planning assistant, tourism officer, economic development manager and head of customer services and economic development. His last role was as strategic director, development planning and communities.

Over the years he has covered a wide range of issues including forward planning, car parks, community and economic development, tourism, corporate services, business improvement and e-government.

His work has encompassed many projects within and beyond the council, including the fit out of the new Cirencester Leisure Centre; establishing the district council's front of house customer service; outsourcing several leisure centres and the Corinium Museum; and responding to flooding in the district during the widespread 2007 floods and on other occasions.

At a farewell ceremony on March 25, colleagues praised Mr Fotherby's outstanding work ethic, his endless energy and his commitment to the council and Cotswold residents.

The district council's chief executive, David Neudegg, led the tributes. He said: “When you look at Andy’s service to the council, what really stands out is his tremendous hard work, loyalty and dedication, allied to a very optimistic outlook on life in general. Members of staff of all ages have appreciated his genuine desire to make them feel at home and get the most out of their careers – this trait marks him out as a very approachable and immensely popular person and he will leave a very big hole to fill.”

Mr Fotherby acknowledged that he would be leaving behind a host of friends and happy memories:

“It’s been a pleasure to have worked for the council and I have thoroughly enjoyed a varied, challenging and rewarding career. It’s hard to believe that over 40 years have passed since I started working for Cotswold District Council and the list of people I would like to thank is very long indeed. I have worked for six excellent chief executives and have seen many changes in the organisation – and there are more challenges on the horizon as we move towards closer working with three other local authorities.

"This is an exciting time to be a local government officer and I am sure that those remaining will grasp the many opportunities which will arise.”

Mr Fotherby is a fitness fanatic and his immediate goal in retirement is to prepare for an upcoming triathlon so that he can improve on his previous best performance. However, he has assured his family that he will also find time to tackle a list of tasks to do around the house.
