AN award-winning Hagley fish frier picked up some top trade tips during a trip to Scotland.

James Houlston, of Our Plaice in Hagley, took part in the 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards educational study trip, courtesy of Seafood Scotland and The Scottish Seafood Partnership.

The 20-year-old who was shortlisted in the Young Fish Frier of the Year category of the 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards, joined fellow finalists in visiting the port of Peterhead, Europe’s white fish capital.

They had the opportunity to learn about the supply channels for haddock and cod from Scotland to the rest of the UK and further afield, gaining insight into North East Scotland’s key role within the UK fishing industry.

James said: "The study trip to Scotland was incredible, to see Peterhead fish market and the processing plants first hand was an experience I'll never forget.

"We were lucky enough to meet some key people who were willing to share there knowledge with all of us young fish friers."
