A KIND-hearted Redditch resident has raised more than £700 for charity.

Valentine Fanning, who emigrated from Ireland in the 50s, recently celebrated his 85th birthday, but instead of asking for birthday presents or anything for himself the altruistic octogenarian asked family and friends to donate to the Alzheimers Society.

He did however, have a party with more than 140 people at the Studley Road Social Club in Redditch to celebrate the special milestone on November 1.

Valentine's son Chris said: "The reason for choosing the Alzheimers Society for the donation was that my mother died from the disease seven years ago, from which point my father has been holding charity dances to raise funds.

"He treated his birthday party as one of these dances."

The cash will go toward the charity which which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
