A MUM has called for a toy sword from a Hereford store to be recalled after she said it exploded in her son's face.

Mandy Pridham bought a glow stick sword from The Range in Three Elms Road on Tuesday, October 14 for her four-year-old son, Jacob.

When they left the store they drove to the Bobblestock Co-op in Kempton Avenue with Mandy's friend and her daughter.

Mandy, 42, said: "I was sat in the car with friends and all of a sudden there was just a scream. I turned around and saw the sword had exploded onto his face.

"He was glowing purple and he had the stuff in his eyes. He was screaming and my son never screams."

She said Jacob was playing with the sword when it broke and it may have bent but was surprised to see it break.

She took him into the Co-op where the store's first aider assisted him and bathed his eyes.

Mandy, who lives in Dinmore, said: "It took over 30 minutes for the pain in his eyes to stop burning. We were debating whether to call an ambulance or not.

"Every time we tried to move him he needed the water on his eyes all the time."

She took him to A&E and they said it should not be a harmful substance and it would just irritate his eyes.

But she said when she took him to a specialist the next day they said they could see slight marking on his corneas.

Mandy went back to The Range and complained and on the second visit they asked for photos and said they would investigate.

She said: "I would like to see the product recalled and retested because there was something in there that wasn't just irritating the eyes."

She thanked the member of staff, Sam, from the Co-op who helped them.

A spokesman for The Range said: "This complaint is currently under investigation and we have been liaising directly with the customer."
